Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Heng Swee Keat, spoke at the launch of Clean and Green Singapore 2023. The event was held to commemorate its milestone year while also acknowledging the ongoing journey toward a cleaner and greener Singapore.
In his speech, DPM Heng highlighted that although Singapore has made significant strides in its Clean and Green Journey over the past few decades, it remns committed to this cause more than ever before - especially amidst global challenges such as climate change and post-pandemic recovery. He encouraged every citizen to contribute their part for a cleaner and greener future.
DPM Heng also acknowledged Singapore's 50th anniversary of its Ministry of Sustnability and Environment MSE and the MSE’s transformation since its inception from solely focusing on environmental pollution control into an all-encompassing organization tackling climate change, water resilience, food security and promoting sustnability.
To support ground-up initiatives, he introduced a new $50 million SG Eco Fund. This fund has already supported over 140 projects med at fostering green activities across the island's neighborhoods.
DPM Heng thanked Singapore's environmental service workforce for their hard work and dedication during COVID-19. To recognize their efforts, DPM Heng announced that the government would be awarding 27 of these workers with an Environmental Services Star Award.
Furthermore, he spoke about Workforce Singapore's new Career Conversion Program for Sustnability Professionals which will help equip Singaporeans with sustnability skills including carbon accounting and compliance reporting among others. This program attract more individuals into the growing green economy sectors like environmental services industry, thereby contributing directly towards a cleaner and greener Singapore.
Clean and Green Singapore is not just about protecting our environment but also promoting a culture of conservation amongst citizens and communities. It's about investing in technologies that are sustnable and future-proofing our city for years to come.
Closing the event, DPM Heng reiterated Singapore's commitment to this cause and invited everyone to play their part. He concluded by thanking every individual who has played a role so far and encouraged more to join hands towards achieving an even cleaner and greener Singapore.
